Advent in Eyes of Joseph and Mary - Retreat - Mons. Joseph Schaedel

Mons. Joseph SchaedelMons. Joseph Schaedel gives three advent talks at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center for our December Day of Reflection titled Advent through the Eyes of Joseph and Mary on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Matthew 1:18-21 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; (19) and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. (20) But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; (21) she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

1. Meaning of Advent

In this talk he explains the meaning of Advent, which it is basically a time of anticipation for the coming of Christ as a preparation for Christmas, but also for the coming of Christ on our Judgment Day, the day we take our last breadth. The best preparation is to strive for humility.

2. Serving Others

In this talk he exhorts us to avoid the self-centered nature of the modern Christmas celebration which has little to do with Christ. He suggests that we should take Our Lady's example of focusing on others and on Christ. If we can do this then we will have the essence of the Christmas spirit.

3. Joseph Guide to Christmas

In this talk he explains the role of St Joseph in the Advent Season as guide to the Holy Family toward Christmas.

Forming Sacred Scripture: Understanding How the Bible Came to Be

Sacred ScriptureThe Bible is the most studied document in human history and the most published book ever. Love for the inspired Word of God has always led people to study not only what the text says, but also how the text came to be. There is a remarkable history of the formation and preservation of the Word of God, one which extends down right to the Bible in your hands! In the course of history we can learn many things of not only scholarly interest, but also of devotional and apologetical importance.

The three main topics of this talk are:

  • The Canon of Scripture: How the various books of the Bible were gathered into one collection.
  • Manuscript History: How scholars have tried to obtain the best text possible for every book of the Bible.
  • Editions of the Bible: How the Bible has been translated into its various English editions that we use today.

Why Worship Jesus Christ as the Son of God? - Bradley Elliott

Brother Bradley Elliott
Br. Bradley Thomas Elliott talks about the world today where many people admire Jesus, they admire his moral teachings, and his example of life, many people claim to follow his teachings as if Jesus was one of the moral great world leaders, but he is not only a great man he is the Son of God, God himself.

Col 1:11-20 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, (12) giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. (13) He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, (14) in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (15) He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; (16) for in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities all things were created through him and for him. (17) He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (18) He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, that in everything he might be pre-eminent. (19) For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, (20) and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Hell and Purgatory – Marino Restrepo

Marino RestrepoSadly a lot of Catholics don’t believe in purgatory neither in hell, they are contaminated with Protestants doctrines, those who deny existence of purgatory and hell, that’s why Marino Restrepo explain his vision of purgatory and hell in his mystical experience with the Lord.

1Cor 3:11-15 For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (12) Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw- (13) each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. (14) If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. (15) If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

Rapture vs Second Coming Doctrine - Allison Tobolla

Allison Tobolla
Dr. Allison Tobolla Low answer questions on the dispensationalist doctrine of rapture and the second coming of Jesus and what happens after death. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Faith Formation.

Dispensationalism

  • Defines history into epochs/dispensations/periods. This method also includes a distinct period of the end times.
  • Today form of Dispensationalism made popular in the 1800s. Common among Protestants who are Fundamentalists and Evangelicals. Includes the idea of a "Secret rapture of believers"

1 Thess 4:16-17 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord.

Introducing the Bible to Everyone in 6 Weeks - Fr. Bill Wack

Fr. Bill WackFather Will Wack presents a 6 week series of bible classes to introduce the Bible and the glory of God to everyone, especially for beginners. Fr. Bill Wack CSC is the Pastor of St. Ignatius Martyr parish in Austin Texas.

Rom 10:9-15 Because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (10) For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. (11) The scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put to shame." (12) For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call upon him. (13) For, "every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved." (14) But how are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? (15) And how can men preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!"

The Sacrament of Confession - Father Larry Richards

Father Larry RichardsFather Larry Richards talks about the sacrament of confession or reconciliation and its profound effects on the human soul.

John 20:19-23 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." (20) When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. (21) Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." (22) And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (23) If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Sola Scriptura and Authority Debate - Fr. Mitch Pacwa and Kenneth Samples

Fr. Mitch Pacwa and Kenneth SamplesFr. Mitch Pacwa, debates with Kenneth Samples about "Sola Scriptura" (Bible alone protestant doctrine) and the Authority.

1Ti 3:14-16 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that, (15) if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. (16) Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of our religion: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
2Ti 3:14-17 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it (15) and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (16) All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Teaching the Big Picture of Salvation History in an Hour - John Bergsma

Dr. John Bergsma guides us through the bible an hour by teaching the big picture of Salvation History.

The Central Focus: Covenant

A Close-Up on Adam

If you are going to get through the Bible in a short amount of time, for example a RCIA presentation, baptismal catechesis, beginning a bible study, a course in scripture or any other time when you review Salvation History this presentation would be appropriated. In any of those circumstances you don´t want to get through sacred history in a very brief amount of time, and that require focus and so the simplest focus that we´re going to employ is the focus on covenant.

Gen 1:26-28 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." (27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (28) And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."

Biblical Wisdom for Your Marriage - Kimberly Hahn

Kimberly Hahn
Kimberly Hahn, author of the Life Nurturing Love series, speaks on "Chosen and Cherished: Biblical Wisdom for Your Marriage"
Ephesians 5:21-28 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. (22) Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. (23) For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. (24) As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands. (25) Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, (26) that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, (27) that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. (28) Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Book of Revelation in 6 Lessons - Karlo Broussard

Karlo BroussardIn this 6 lesson seminar, Karlo provides the key to unlock the mystery of the Book of Revelation in which one discovers a prophetic vision of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman army in 70 A.D. With such a literal historical interpretation as a foundation, Karlo explains the anagogical and moral senses as well.
I’m gonna share with you this sort of Catholic posture with which we can approach the book of Revelation... What we are going to see is that the book of Revelation is actually a revelation given to John which is a prophecy of the impending judgment on Jerusalem in 70 AD when Jerusalem is siege by the Roman Empire and the city was burned along with Salomon´s temple.

Lesson 1: The Beginning of the Unveiling

In this talk, which is lesson 1 of a 6 lesson seminar entitled "Unveiling the Mystery: A Catholic Study of the Book of Revelation," Karlo gives a posture with which the Catholic can approach the Book of Revelation. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

"The Bible is Catholic" Full Series - Robert Tilley

Robert Tilley
"The Bible is Catholic" is a series of 4 talks by Dr. Robert Tilley where he shows us some fuendamentales truths in our Catholic faith.

1. The word of God and the Word of God made Flesh

In this first week, The Bible is Catholic considers the relationship between the word of God in the Bible and the Word of God made flesh in Jesus Christ. It explores the inextricable connection between the Bible and the Body of Christ, by reference to the Body of Christ as Temple, the Body of Christ as Eucharist, and the Body of Christ as the Church of which Jesus Christ is the head (Eph 1:18-23; Col 1:15-20).

2. The Bible and the Liturgy

In the first week, we discussed the question of the relationship between the Church and the Bible. Some Christians have come to see the Bible as the fundamental ground of truth for the Church. However, the Bible itself says that the Church is "the pillar and ground of truth" (1 Tim 3:15). Far from the Bible being the ground of the Church then, it is the Church which is the fundamental ground of the Bible. The Church wrote and compiled the Bible, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In the Church the words of God in the Bible are made fully present to us in the 'Word made Flesh'; this is sacramentally present in the Eucharist.

Religionless Christianity? - Tim Gray

Ph.D. Tim Gray speaks about the religionless Christianity and spirituality movement. Can we have Christianity without the church?

Hebrews 12:22-24 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, (23) and to the assembly of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven, and to a judge who is God of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, (24) and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks more graciously than the blood of Abel.

Eschatology: Death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell - Norman Chia

HeavenEschatology is a Greek word that means the doctrine of the last things. These are things, that church teaches, that happen when we die.

1. Your death is certain
2. You will experience life after death
3. Your life after death is eternal
4. You will experience either heaven or hell
1021 Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested in Christ.592 The New Testament speaks of judgment primarily in its aspect of the final encounter with Christ in his second coming, but also repeatedly affirms that each will be rewarded immediately after death in accordance with his works and faith. The parable of the poor man Lazarus and the words of Christ on the cross to the good thief, as well as other New Testament texts speak of a final destiny of the soul--a destiny which can be different for some and for others.

Fallacies of the Doctrine of "Sola Scriptura" - Tim Staples

Tim StaplesTim Staples examines the “Sola Scriptura” (Bible Alone) doctrine and point out the logical fallacies as well at the obvious lack of evidences for this protestant teaching. Sola Scriptura is unreasonable, unbiblical, unhistorical, and unworkable

The most important topic in apologetics, especially when dealing with evangelical and fundamentalist Christians, concerns the doctrine of “Sola Scriptura” This teaching is in fact the very foundation of the reformation… I always just assumed this doctrine to be true, I mean, Sacred Scripture was the regular “Fide” the rule of faith, and the sola rule of faith for all Christians. This teaching, I would say was the very foundation for everything we believe ant thought as Baptist an later when I became a minister of the Assemblies of God as well.

2Ti 3:16-17 All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Finding Strength in Weakness as Saint Paul did? - Norman Chia

Saint Paul
A live session exploring how does the church find encouragement from the mystery of the cross. Sharing his faith threatening 'thorn in the flesh' experience, St Paul encourages the Corinthians to keep the faith by finding the power of God in the most unexpected places.
1 Co 1:18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
2Co 12:8-10 Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; (9) but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (10) For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

"Spiritual Combat" Retreat - Father Bill Casey

Father Bill Casey
Father Bill Casey made this spiritual retreat to understand what is really happening in today´s world and what danger truly are in the spiritual battle of our time.
Matthew 10:34-39 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's foes will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Fr. Wade Menezes
5 part miniseries on the Catholic Church's doctrine and teachings about the Four Last Things: Death, Judgement, Heaven, and Hell. Fr. Wade Menezes, CPM, focuses on the differences between the Particular Judgement and the Last Judgement; the Church's teaching on Heaven; the chief characteristics of the risen, glorified, and transfigured human body; the existence of hell; and growing nearer to God.
Philippians 2:12-16. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

The Mass Explained - Fr. Larry Richards

Father Larry Richards
Fr. Larry Richards explains the biblical foundations of the Mass which God created as a sacrament of great importance.

If you don´t go to mass is because you don´t realize that it´s costing God´s his life. God is giving everything for love to us and right from the very beginning, since the creation on time, since the fall of men, God is always been preparing us for this great sacrament.

Gen 22:2-8. He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Mori'ah, and offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I shall tell you." (3) So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; and he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. (4) On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place afar off. (5) Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the ass; I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you." (6) And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. (7) And Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father!" And he said, "Here am I, my son." He said, "Behold, the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" (8) Abraham said, "God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So they went both of them together.

CCC 27. The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for:
The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he is called to communion with God. This invitation to converse with God is addressed to man as soon as he comes into being. For if man exists it is because God has created him through love, and through love continues to hold him in existence. He cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and entrusts himself to his creator.
